After growing Heath & Sons Management Services from a two-person operation into a multimillion-dollar general contractor, company President & CEO Mike Heath is already focused on what comes next.

Co-founded in 2018 with his son, Drew, Heath began the Rocky Mount company with one truck and a primary focus on stormwater management. Today, Heath & Sons employs more than 20 team members, operates a growing fleet of trucks and heavy equipment, maintains an office on a 10-acre property and serves several hundred customers.
For Heath, a veteran who brought a commitment to service and leadership into entrepreneurship, that growth has created opportunities not only for the business, but also for its employees and the surrounding community.
The company’s growth is reflected in its revenue, which increased from approximately $300,000 in its first year to more than $3 million last year. For Heath, however, success extends beyond the business itself. As Heath & Sons has grown, giving back has become an important part of the company’s approach.

Each year, Heath & Sons donates 1% of its annual revenue to local initiatives and nonprofit organizations. That commitment means the company’s ability to give back grows alongside the business, allowing its success to have an impact beyond its day-to-day operations.
It’s an approach rooted in supporting the community that has guided Heath & Sons from the beginning. As the company adds employees, serves more customers and pursues new opportunities, giving back remains an important part of its foundation.
As the business has evolved, the SBTDC has proved to be an important resource for Heath and the team. The SBTDC’s Government Contracting Assistance Program (GCAP) has worked with the company to evaluate opportunities, navigate challenges and make informed decisions as it plans for continued growth.
“The SBTDC counselors have taken the time to understand our business and our goals,” Heath said. “Their experience, insight, and genuine commitment to our success have made them a trusted resource as we continue to grow and plan for the future.”
GCAP Counselor Dave James has helped Heath & Sons turn its attention toward expanding its federal and state contracting operations. Through GCAP, the SBTDC helps North Carolina businesses understand the government marketplace, identify opportunities, conduct market research and navigate the procurement process.
As a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business and an SBA HUBZone-certified firm, Heath & Sons plans to strategically leverage its certifications and capabilities to pursue new opportunities. The company has hired a dedicated project manager for its federal division and is adding the personnel and resources needed to support that growth.
Over the next several years, Heath & Sons plans to expand its government contracting capabilities, strengthen its team and establish a greater presence in the federal and state marketplaces.
As the company moves forward, the priorities that have shaped it since 2018 remain the same: quality, reliability, personal service and a commitment to giving back. For Heath, the focus is on carrying those values forward while positioning Heath & Sons for continued success.
