HR and Administration Specialist
Raleigh, NC
As the Human Resources Specialist, you will serve as the first point of contact for HR needs within the Small Business and Technology Development Center (SBTDC) at NC State and across the statewide program, which includes 11 Regional Service Centers and 16 offices located across the UNC System. Reporting to the SBTDC Director of Finance and Administration, you will work closely with SBTDC District Directors, management, and University Human Resources departments across the UNC System to coordinate HR processes and ensure compliance with Federal, State, and University policies.
In this role, you will manage a broad range of HR functions, including recruitment and hiring, position management, leave administration, payroll, performance management, classification and compensation, and basic benefits inquiries, supporting employees across EPS, SHRA, Time-Limited, Temporary, Student Worker, and no-pay appointment categories.
Events & Programs Manager
Raleigh, NC
The Events & Programs Manager leads the planning and execution of SBTDC events across North Carolina, helping ensure a consistent, high-quality experience for attendees and staff. The position oversees the full event process, including selecting venues, negotiating contracts, managing budgets and vendors, coordinating registration and event logistics, and directing on-site operations.
The role works closely with SBTDC leadership, communications and regional teams to ensure events support organizational goals and meet established standards. The role also develops statewide event processes and resources, builds relationships with venues, vendors and sponsors, and provides guidance to regional staff planning local events.
General Business Counselor
Charlotte, NC
This senior-level position works directly with aspiring entrepreneurs and small and mid-sized business owners to help them start, manage and grow their businesses. The counselor provides expert, one-on-one business guidance, training, research and technical assistance to help clients address challenges, explore new markets, develop new products or technologies and identify opportunities for growth.
The position serves businesses in the Charlotte area and across an assigned multi-county region, connecting clients with additional SBTDC expertise and resources when needed. The role requires broad knowledge of small business management, including financial analysis and market research, as well as the ability to independently manage multiple clients and priorities.
How We Operate
The SBTDC has a unique structure and relationship to the UNC System. Each of our 16 offices is affiliated with one of the system’s universities, which serves as the host, allowing us to tap the vast resources of the UNC system, including faculty and student teams, to assist our clients.
- Host university. All SBTDC positions are hired through the host university within the hiring region. For example, in the western part of the state, a position would be hired through Western Carolina University or UNC-Asheville.
- University-specific job titles. Each university system has its own internal nomenclature for job titles. For example, they may use the term “program specialist” instead of “business counselor” in their internal job posting. However, your official title will reflect the SBTDC language, not your university’s internal nomenclature.
The Business Counselor Role
At the SBTDC, our professional staff are business counselors. Unlike business consultants, who provide advice and may produce work for a client, SBTDC counselors strive for greater engagement and partnership with clients. Our counselors help owners analyze all aspects of their business to identify areas for management improvement and business growth.
