Oct 26, 2026

Artificial intelligence is transforming how businesses operate, offering new opportunities to improve efficiency, streamline processes, and support growth. From automating routine tasks to analyzing data and developing marketing content, AI tools are becoming increasingly relevant to businesses of all sizes. However, for many small business owners, understanding where to begin and how to use these tools effectively can be a challenge.

In an effort to help small businesses navigate these opportunities, the North Carolina SBDTC is proud to share that five of its counselors have earned the America’s SBDC AI U certification, expanding their expertise in AI and strengthening their ability to support SBTDC clients.

The newly certified counselors include:

Sheila Dalton

General Business Councelor, Chapel Hill

Doug Story

General Business Counselor, Asheville

Qing Zhang

International Business Counselor, Wilmington

Owen George

International Business Counselor, Triad West

Andrew Ferris

Business Counselor, Greenville

Developed through a $10 million grant from Google.org, AI U is a national training initiative led by America’s SBDC to equip business advisors with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to help small businesses explore and adopt AI. The initiative spans all 63 SBDC networks nationwide and includes online coursework, live training opportunities, and student innovation projects, with a goal of helping 100,000 small businesses leverage AI to grow.

For SBTDC clients, this additional expertise means counselors are better equipped to discuss AI opportunities, identify practical applications, and help business owners evaluate how emerging technologies might fit into their operations. Whether a business is just beginning to explore AI or looking for ways to incorporate new tools into existing processes, informed guidance can help owners approach these decisions with greater confidence.

The completion of the AI U certification reflects the SBTDC’s ongoing commitment to professional development and staying ahead of the evolving needs of North Carolina’s business community. Congratulations to Sheila, Doug, Qing, Owen, and Andrew on this accomplishment, and their continued commitment to helping North Carolina businesses succeed!
