Rescue Essentials founder Phil Carey cut his teeth as a Wilderness First Responder and EMT. His first effort at providing medical supplies began in 1989 with Atwater Carey Ltd. In 2007 Phil formed a partnership with Jorian Sartorius (formerly VP at Atwater Carey Ltd.) and Sara Jensen, and launched the Rescue Essentials online store, significantly reducing costs to the end-user. Rescue Essentials charted a new course, committing to serving law enforcement, military, Fire/EMS and search and rescue communities with top-quality tactical medical products delivered in a timely manner with flat rate $4.99 shipping.
Rescue Essentials is a leading manufacturer and marketer of Individual First Aid Kits, tactical EMS supplies, and first responder trauma gear and equipment. Rescue Essentials’ products are sold to medical and law enforcement agencies throughout the world, including the Department of Homeland Security, FBI, and U.S. Department of Defense. Rescue Essentials maintains a variety of products on the GSA Advantage program. In addition, some products are registered with National Stock Number (NSN). One of these products is the Slishman Traction Splint (STS).

Trans-Utility Services was created in 2015 to be an industry leader in transformer field services. Staffed with experienced Field Service Technicians they utilize the newest mobile oil processing equipment in the industry. Their equipment can handle the toughest jobs and the tightest deadlines. Equipment capabilities allow them to do; Installation, Maintenance, Oil processing and Testing. Trans-Utility Services has their corporate office in Maine and mobile equipment and personnel located across the country serving clients. Jim Scandrol, vice president of sales, contacted his local GCAP counselor for assistance as the firm expanded into the government market. During the initial sessions, NAICs codes were selected and Jim completed his SAM registration.
Follow-on sessions included looking for opportunities on Federal Business Opportunities (FBO) and researching several potential competitors and partners. Jim and his counselor began reviewing Trans-Utility’s Government Marketing Plans for 2016 which focused on increasing brand awareness by attending government contracting events to network and gain additional training in this new market. The first event attended was Opportunities 2016 in Asheville.

Trans-Utility Services obtained their first work on a government facility in the form of a subcontract with a large prime contractor in 2016. In 2017, they received a five year contract from the Navy for transformer oil testing, a GCAP counselor assisted with both bids/proposals. In the first Quarter of 2018, Trans-Utility brought a second big rig to meet the demand of 3 years of steady growth and servicing customers on both coasts. Their government market now includes municipalities such as Johnson City Tennessee; Jim found the opportunity through PROBID. PROBID is a computer-based program that matches your products or services to bid opportunities from government agencies.

Long time GCAP client Bennett Aerospace celebrated their 10 year anniversary in August. Bennett Aerospace began as a small research company, pursuing SBIR contracts with the Department of Defense and other agencies. As the company grew, they began reviewing technical service and research support contracts. In late 2011, owner Julia Bennett decided it was time to pursue 8(a) certification to accelerate their growth in the federal marketplace. She worked with her local GCAP counselor to make this happen. Bennett Aerospace obtained their 8(a) certification in 2012, and continued working with the GCAP counselor to find contract opportunities. Since its certification, the company has grown to over 100 employees, and have active contracts with the Army Research Office, Navy SPAWAR, the Drug Enforcement Agency, and others. Julia continues to lead the company in all of their efforts, daily demonstrating their core values: collaborative, accountable, committed, innovative, and caring. S2Technologies is a professional services firm providing mission-focused Technical, Programmatic, Management and Administrative support to Federal Defense and Civilian agencies as well as commercial customers. Founded in 2011 by Maggie Stein, the company operates with the mission of bringing together mission-experienced veterans and customers to create a decisive advantage. S2 holds active HUBZone, SDVOSB, EDWOSB, and NC HUB certifications.
Company owner Maggie Stein reached out to the NC GCAP in 2017. The company had one prime contract as well as several subcontracts and was looking to expand their prime contracting experience as well as expand their functional capabilities and expand their DoD customer base. Maggie and her GCAP counselor discussed the opportunities available in the C4ISR arena, as well as other IT opportunities with federal customers. From this initial meeting, Maggie and her counselor continued to work together, addressing topics including wage determination, pricing agreements, and procurement research. As the company was experiencing rapid growth, Maggie also utilized the services of the SBTDC’s business counselors for financial planning and management counseling.
Maggie’s hard work continues to pay off for S2Technologies. The company was recently awarded a prime contract with the Department of Veteran’s Affairs. S2 continues to look for new opportunities at both the prime and subcontract level, and plans to venture into state and local contracting this year.
