NC Sucess Story: NSF Awardee Athena's Compass

Washington, NC based Athena’s Compass has a mission is to deliver the most exciting and impactful learning experiences possible to empower and to equip our youth with the skills needed to succeed in science, technology, engineering, and math.
Game-based learning has been proven to improve science learning; however, companies have struggled to economically develop effective games capable of delivering enough customer value. The team at Athena’s Compass is looking to overcome the challenges
An NSF Phase 1 awarded in 2017 will aid in the design and development of a classroom-ready game-based high school course in chemistry. It will be a turn-key learning solution that covers the entire high school course curriculum, is aligned with Next Generation Science Standards, tracks student performance, allows for differentiated instruction, and accommodates various curricular structures and schedules.
NSF offers over $150 million a year via it’s SBIR and STTR programs. Athena’s Compass is one of over a dozen small businesses in NC to have received NSF SBIR funding in 2017.
NSF’s next submission deadline will be in June. Topics that NSF is interested in are available for review at: https://seedfund.nsf.gov/assets/files/applicants/combined-topics-09-15-2017.pdf
