PTAC Counseling Success Story: Porter Scientific, Inc

By Terry Stroud, SBTDC NC PTAC Counselor at Fayetteville State University

Porter Scientific, Incorporated, is a Pembroke, NC-based American Indian, woman-owned, HUBZone firm with a distinguished award-winning track record of providing environmental consulting services, and of supporting research and development. Porter Scientific also provides information technology and facility support services to a variety of clients including the United States Departments of Defense and Transportation, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), national commercial entities and local governments and municipalities. Since forming the company in 1977, Dr. Freda Porter, President and CEO, has lead the company to success in contracting through her unique skills, determination and perseverance.

One recent success and challenge is the recent Phase II DOD SBIR contract won by the client. Since 2004, Dr. Porter has had a long and productive relationship with SBTDC business counselors, including those specializing in government contracting and technology development and commercialization. Dr. Porter continues to broaden the base of her success. I spoke with Dr. Porter, and she discussed the continued challenges her company faces, and her appreciation for the assistance she has received from our organization. Dr. Porter advised that she looks forward to our continued assistance as she seeks to continue to build upon her company’s success. This new venture is proving to be a challenge, but one that I am sure the client is capable of meeting.

To work with a company that makes use of their internal talents and external assistance available to achieve success for the company, and economic growth for their local economy, is what makes our jobs worthwhile. I look forward to working with Porter Scientific, Inc. as the SBTDC NC PTAC, General Business, and Technology Development & Commercialization offer our continued assistance with her recent Phase II DOD SBIR contract award. This team effort approach in assistance to the client will, hopefully, lead to much more success to come for the client.
